Reading
I encourage you to ensure that your child is reading for at least 30 minutes every day.
When possible read-aloud to your child and have them read-aloud to you. They may also enjoy reading to a sibling or grand-parent. Spend as much time as possible at your local library or favorite book store. Creating family routines and traditions around reading is an important way to help your child become a life-long reader.

Writing
We will be reviewing conventions such as capitalization, punctuation and spelling when we edit our work on written reading responses and on a variety of writing assignments.
Students will also be working on their handwriting to improve their letter formation and spacing.
The best way to help your child improve his/her writing is by encouraging them to do extensive reading. Reading exposes students to new vocabulary and to the craft of writing. We are learning to look at texts in more than one way. First, as a reader to learn or be entertained by the text. Second, as a writer to study the crafts used by the author that we could apply in our own writing.
I recommend that you find ways to incorporate writing into real-life activities. You can ask your child to write down a recipe with detailed instructions. He/she could write a friendly letter to a family member and begin a regular correspondence with that person. Keeping a daily or weekly journal of life events, thoughts, etc. can be a great way to help them get practice putting their thoughts down on paper.

Math
We will be working on developing math facts fluency. Please practice the math facts with your child and remind them to use the Reflex app beyond the required home learning expectation. See the Internet Resources page for how to access the Reflex app.
Through automaticity students free up their working memory and can devote it to problem solving and learning new concepts and skills (Geary, 1994).
